José María Morelos (1765-1815), Mexican leader of the revolution against Spain and national hero. At the Congress of Chilpancingo in 1813, he presented the "Sentiments of the Nation", a document establishing independence, republican rule, the prohibition of slavery and equality for all citizens. In 1814, Congress adopted the Constitution of Apzingan, Mexico's first constitution.
